Insurance Coverage & Fundings

While psychotherapy services provided by Registered Psychotherapist arenot covered by OHIP, they are often covered by many extended health benefit plans. Most private, employer-based, and student insurance plans provide coverage for 'Psychotherapy' or 'Mental Health' services. We recommend contacting your provider to confirm that your specific plan covers services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). A receipt containing the therapist’s registration number will be sent to you within 1–2 business days of your session for reimbursement.

Questions to ask your provider:

  • Does my plan cover services provided by Registered Psychotherapist? (Be specific about the professional designation)

  • What is the maximum coverages for psychotherapy or mental health services per year?

  • What percentage of cost in each session is covered by your insurance plan (e.g. 80%, 90%, or 100%)?

  • Is there a per session cap and if so, what is it?

  • When does your benefits year start and end?

  • How do I submit claims?

  • What information needs to be included on invoices, especially when two or more people attend a session together?

Ontario Autism Program (OAP) Funding

Psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist may be eligible for reimbursement through the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). Families are responsible for managing their OAP funds and submitting claims directly to the program. Eligibility and reimbursement depend on OAP guidelines and individual funding arrangements. We recommend confirming coverage details with your OAP coordinator.
